Kelso Geography The relaxing coastal village of Kelso is situated in the Umdoni Region of KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast. It lies between Scottburgh and Hibberdene. History Henry Cooke, a Byrne settler, named the coastal village after the town of Kelso on the Tweed River in Scotland. Before the Advent of modern transportation, Kelso served as an important link in the transportation of sugar, as the vessels launched on the Umzinto River could take their cargo out to larger ships already at sea. Today, however, this practice has stopped and Kelso is now a peaceful holiday resort where both locals and holiday-makers can relax and unwind. Science & Nature The beach at Kelso is wonderful to explore, with its interesting rocky outcrops and wonderful seashells. Well known by anglers for its great sea fishing, the beach has excellent facilities too. Entertainment One of the best things to do in Kelso is to just relax on the golden beach and take in the sea air and wonderful view of the ocean. For those visitors who are in the mood for something a bit more active, horse-rides along the beach is great, while, for surfers, the waters of the Indian Ocean are famous for their excellent waves. The remote and legendary Mfazazana Point, a little further south of Kelso, is a quiet but popular spot for the local surfers. Other popular beach activities include kite-boarding. |
