Go Birding on the South Coast

For visitors, the best bird spots have been made more accessible with formation of the exciting Southern KwaZulu-Natal Birding Route.

It is a project of the avitourism division of Birdlife South Africa, in alliance with the Sappi WWF Tree Routes Partnership and a number of tourism and environmental organisations.

The route is divided into four areas, including the South Coast Birding Route. The other three are the Ethekwini Metropolitan Area, the Sisonke Birding Route and the Midlands Birding Route.

The South Coast Route comprises a variety of habitats. These include coastal and wetland environments,
forest, woodland and grassland.

It is the only region in southern Kwa-Zulu-Natal where the two distinct avifaunas,
 afromontane and tropical forest, overlap.

For this reason, forest birding is very popular and productive here. Altogether, 13 interesting South Coast birding sites have been listed.

Along the coast, Empisini, TC Robertson, Vernon Crookes, Umdoni Park,
Ivungu and Mpenjati are all popular birding sites.

A little inland form Port Shepstone, the Idwala Conservancy, Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve
and the popular Lake Eland all have their specials.

Umtamvuna, on the northern bank of the Mtamvuna River has an interesting mic of habitats - and is also popular with those interested in botany.

A little further inland, Harding Dam and the magnificent Weza-Ngele Forest are fascinating places
and attract birders from all over South Africa.

The Southern KwaZulu-Natal Route has a network of knowledgeable and well-trained local guides available to assist visiting birders.
