SURF'S UP

The South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal offers some of the best waves along the South African coastline and plays host to national and international surfing events, with the Mr Price Pro being one of the world's biggest and most hotly contested.

Right from the hollow barrels at Widenham's Greenpoint, to the Jeffrey's Bay-like sets at Elysium and right down to Port Edward, this coastline is a surfers paradise. Each beach has a unique break and legends have been born as surfers have seen the meanest wipeouts and perfect rides ripping across these shores.

The bread and butter to many who grow up here, surfing has a fun, professional and historic place in the community. Giving birth to some of the biggest names in the South African and international surf industry today, the South Coast has earned its place amongst the ultimate surfing destinations. It showcases an array of talented surfers both experienced and up-and-coming.

Surfing as a whole has gone through incredible changes from its 'bad boy' image to gaining its deserved respect in the public eye as the super-competitive, professional sport it is today. The South Coast has always had the surfing vibe, encouraging youngsters to take up a healthy, fun lifestyle.

Surf clubs are organised and run by surfers, with events ranging from club to zonal, regional, tag team and family events. These always include great socials and many braais. With great water temperature and waves throughout the year, every daybreak is greeted with surfers on the line-up looking to paddle into the barrel.
