FOUR BEACHES FLY FLAGS

Blue waters and golden beaches are what bring visitors to the South Coast. The beaches are among the best in the world and are flying the blue flag to prove it.

A Blue Flag is an international annual award given to beaches that meet excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards.

Margate, Ramsgate, Marina/San Lameer and Trafalgar beaches were awarded Blue Flag Status this year. There are four pilot Blue Flag Beaches that are working towards full accreditation namely Hibberdene, Umzumbe, St Micheal's and Lucien.

The Blue Flag is awarded to beaches that comply with the Blue Flag criteria. This covers four aspects of coastal management: water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management and safety and services.

In South Africa, the Blue Flag season fans for a full year, from November 1 to October 31.

The prestigious award assures bathers that the beaches are clean, safe and environmentally friendly. It also helps to educate the community about the need to care for the coastline.

Blue Flag is managed by the Wild Life and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) in partnership with the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) and participating coastal authorities under the Coast care initiative of DEAT.

Coast care is the initiative which implements the South African Government's White Paper for Sustainable Coastal Development in South Africa.

The Blue Flag campaign is one of several programmes run under the Coast care project.
