GET A PERMIT BEFORE YOU CAST
In terms of the Marine Living Resources Act 18 of 1998, permits are required to undertake any activity with regard to the catching, collection or harvesting of all marine resources. This means that fisherman need a recreational angling permit to fish from the shore, in an estuary or from any boat at sea, including all charter vessels. Permits are also required for the collection of mussels and other bait, spearfishing and for the use of cast net.
Anglers may purchase a monthly permit (valid for 30 days) or an annual permit. You will have to produce your identity or passport number when applying and the permits are not transferable.
Angling, spearfishing, cast netting, marine aquarium, East Coast rock lobster (crayfish), mud crab and mollusc permits can be obtained from the post office. Only mussel permits need to be purchased from the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Marine Permits Office, Mpenjati Nature Reserve, off the R61 highway at Palm Beach.
