Ramsgate Geography The coastal village and holiday resort of Ramsgate is situated on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal just south of Margate. It is located about 156km south of Durban and the Durban International Airport. History The quaint village was established on a farm called "Bilanhlola" or the "magic boiler", named after the bubbling of the lagoon waters caused by strong currents. The first person to settle in the area was a painter and violinist, Paul Buck. In 1892 he set up his shack on the banks of what he called the "Blue Lagoon" and his reputation as an artist, as well as that of the lagoon, quickly spread. By 1958 it had been developed into what it is today - a charming holiday resort. Arts & Culture Visitors who take an interest in things cultural can enjoy the paintings on show at the art gallery situated at the tea-house at the lagoon. Science & Nature Ramsgate beach is simply superb, and is one of South Africa's beaches that has been awarded the Blue Flag on many occasions. The lagoon is a notable feature and is a great source of entertainment, especially for children. Entertainment There is an easy walking trail that extends southwards from Ramsgate towards the picturesque Southbroom beach and lagoon. Ramsgate is noted for its lovely restaurants and charming tearooms, and especially for the now legendary Waffle House on the Blue Lagoon. There is an interesting and comprehensive Marine Adventure Centre, while fun activities can be enjoyed at the Ramsgate Ski Boat Adventure Centre under the watchful eye of trained lifeguards. Some of the activities on offer include beach volleyball, surfing lessons or even whale watching excursions. Sport Fishermen love the vantage points at Little Billy and Blue Bay, while surfers and all other ocean-going sportsman enjoy the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean.
