Shelly Beach Geography The charming coastal resort of Shelly Beach lies just south of Port Shepstone, on KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast. History Shelly Beach is so named because of the variety and sheer numbers of shells that wash up onto its shores. Today, the popular holiday resort has one of the busiest ski-boat bases on the coast as well as being the base of the National Sea Rescue Institute. Science & Nature Shelly Beach is home to one of the top shark and game-fish dive spots in the world - Protea Banks. The bank is situated 7km's off the shore and can be reached by launching a boat from the Sonny Evans Ski Boat Club. This magnificent submerged reef teems with oceanic life and the sites include underwater caves and amphitheaters. Living up to its name, Shelly Beach is a shell collectors delight and lovers of these beautiful natural masterpieces can see the biggest display of sea shells in South Africa at the Sea-Shell Museum on the main road. Entertainment Shelly Beach is a holidaymakers paradise and the town has much to offer visitors. The town is home to one of the biggest & best shopping malls along the Hibiscus Coast, the Shelly Centre, which offers good restaurants, cinemas and excellent shopping opportunities. Those who feel like throwing dice and who yearn for the glitzy atmosphere of a casino can take a 30-minute drive to the Wild Coast Casino. Along the way, why not pick up some traditional Zulu souvenirs at a roadside curio stall Sport Shelly Beach is home to a large diving and snorkeling fraternity. Visitors who are experienced divers can check out the colourful reefs and stunning marine life of the Protea Banks, while diving schools will give advice and training and hire equipment out to the less experienced.
