Umtentweni Geography The small coastal resort of Umtentwni is situated between the Mzimkule and the Mtentweni rivers, just north of Port Shepstone, on KwaZulu-Natal's lovely Hibiscus Coast. Umtentweni is located within easy access of the N3 highway, and is about and hour's drive south of Durban International Airport. History Named after a species of grass that grows on the bank of the river, Umtentweni is a Zulu word and literally means "the river where pointed grass grows". This residential and holiday resort town has a clam lagoon, a lovely swimming area and is an ideal getaway for city slickers. Experiencing rapid growth, Umtentweni now has many complexes, flats and accommodation establishments, yet the lush greenery still dominates. Together with Anerley, Southport, Sea Park and Sunwich Port, Umtentweni makes up part of the borough of Bendigo, named after the original farm on which they were developed. Arts & Culture Visitors to Umtentweni can view the grave of Ndongeni, the black aide who accompanied Dick King on his famous ride to Grahamstown. Ndongeni received a land grant on the bank of the Mzimkulu River in appreciation for his help. Science & Nature The Hibiscus Coast is well regarded for its natural beauty and wonderful attractions. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean are home to frolicking dolphin and other magnificent sea creatures that can be seen from the beach at Umtentweni. This section of KwaZulu-Natal's south coast is also one of the major points of the world famous Sardine Run, that can be experienced in June and July each year. Millions of shimmering fish migrate in huge "balls", making for an absolutely incredible sight. The lush hills and valleys of this subtropical region are home to an abundant bird life. Entertainment Much of the entertainment in Umtentweni focuses on nature and the ocean, with a tidal pool (known as "Granny Pool") featuring on the main beach of Umtentweni, a safe swimming beach. Entertainment of the man-made kind can be found at 1) the Third Avenue Pub -about 100m's from the main beach-; 2) two modern shopping malls at Port Shepstone (4km's away) and nearby Shelly Beach; and 3) the nearby Wild Coast Casino. Other highlights of the area include 4) the snake and crocodile farms. Umtentweni is also home to various excellent restaurants, perfect for sipping chilled wine and noshing on fresh seafood at sundown. If you are seeking an ultimate thrill however, be sure to visit the Oribi Gorge, which has the highest gorge swing in the world (33 storeys). Other thrilling adventures include diving with sharks at Protea Banks. Sport The Hibiscus Coast appeals to the sporty traveler, as the area boasts ten top class golf courses, surfing, seep sea fishing, sailing and diving. The hills and valleys of the area appeal to those looking for quality hiking and mountain biking and mountain biking trails, while the town of Umtentweni itself has tennis and bowls facilities. |
