The word Umtamvuna means the “reaper of mouth fulls”
Derived from the damage that it’s floods do to crops.
It is also said that any person failing to confess their sins before fording the river will be carried away by the water spirit’s
and supposed to be the home of mermaids, who have often been reportedly seen playing in the water on moonlight nights.
